“The important thing is to keep on drawing when you start to paint. Never graduate from drawing.”
John Sloan

Often times artists will jump into painting and forget about drawing. Maybe you don’t think you can draw?…or haven’t done it since you first started making art or when you were a kid? Maybe you draw all the time but are looking for fresh inspiration? Perhaps you are a painter that feels you would benefit with some drawing practice and drawing tips to enhance your ability to see and paint better.

In this 2 day workshop Masla will lead you through a large gamut of approaches to drawing extracting lessons from his over 50 years of experience making art. Through a series of exercises you will discover the magic of mark making, develop understanding, skills and techniques as well as evolve your ability to see. This workshop will not only build your confidence in your painting and art making but will also help you connect with your intuitive individuality, expanding your possibilities and igniting your imagination.

Day 1 – FUNdamentals:

During this first day you will be introduced to a wide range of drawing concepts and techniques. Masla will be sharing concepts exploring some of the basic elements of drawing and painting through illustrative, easy to follow, fun exercises. You will dive into the fundamentals of drawing, learning about intention and conception, composition, value, line, shape, edges, contrast, contours, modulation, perspective, chiaroscuro, (light and shadow) and  sfumato (the “smokey blend”). Many of these exercises are designed so that you can continue practicing on your own to build your skills, confidence and understanding.

Day 2 – Building on the FUNdamentals:

Masla will be sharing more exercises and techniques as we dive deeper into the FUNdamentals of drawing. During this session we will explore more in depth the principles of form drawing – the effects of value, light and shadow (chiaroscuro) and gradation/transition as well as perception of texture in establishing the sense of form and creating 3 dimensional illussions, (essential for convincing representational drawing). We will also explore different media for drawing practice and the bridge from drawing to painting as he shares with you simple techniques for using graphite wash pencils and the practice and materials of keeping a sketchbook/journal. Methods for simplifying form as well as the use of back lighting and the silhouette, positive and negative space, applying a focal point and the use of dominance in the composition will also be explored.
